Christian Concourse Newsletter of the Month June 2008 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Greetings from us to each of you on this wonderful June day! We want to welcome a new board member into our organization. David Ensley has joined us as Treasurer of the ministry. He is a long-time friend and brother in Christ who currently serves in a supervisorary position with a large corporation working in waste disposal in our region. With devotion to Christ and a deep appreciation for the work of Christian Concourse, we know David will be a great blessing to this work. Please pray for him as he seeks to provide fresh energy and wise counsel to our board meetings. You may remember our participation at the Virginia Association of Activity Professionals Annual Conference in March. One of the dear activity directors who attended our seminar on “Christian Ministry in Long Term Care” has written us a letter in appreciation of that class and the materials we distributed to the attendees. We reprint it here as an encouragement to you, our supporters: What a wonderful blessing it was today to hear eleven of my residents singing the songs from your hymn book. The oldest lady is 93 years old! When I explained that the books and accompanying CD’s were free to all Activity Directors in your class at the VAAP State conference, they were amazed. I was pleased when one of them was so perceptive and said “someone had to give money for these books to be made for your teacher to give them to us FREE.” Most of my residents have some degree of Alzheimer’s disease, so anytime they are capable of this level of reasoning, I am very pleased. Thank you, Jerry Johnson, and everyone who makes this ministry available to nursing homes. As a Christian Activity Director working in the profession that the Lord led me to do, it is my honor to serve Him here with these special residents. We love the old 50’s songs, the old country music that they can sing along with and the silly, fun songs that put our feet to tapping and brings laughter. But the most special songs are the hymns that they learned back when they were important leaders in their churches, singing in their choirs. I praise God that these memories have not been stolen away because of Alzheimer’s. All that my residents needed was your songbook in their hands in that much needed large print and the beautiful CD music and away we went! After each song we all applauded for ourselves. They surprised themselves at how good they sounded! May the Lord continue to bless you, Jerry Johnson, and everyone who contributes to this meaningful ministry.
