man, and you shall fear your God: I am the LORD. (ESV)
Deuteronomy 24:17-18
You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the
fatherless, or take a widow's garment in pledge, 18 but you shall

redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this. (ESV)
Proverbs 23:22

and do not despise your mother when she is old. (ESV)
Isaiah 35:3-4a

(ESV)
Jeremiah 22:3-5
Thus says the LORD: Do justice and righteousness, and deliver
from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do
no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the
fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this
place. 4 For if you will indeed obey this word, then there
shall enter the gates of this house kings who sit on the throne of
David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their servants and
their people. 5 But if you will not obey these words, I swear
by myself, declares the LORD, that this house shall become a
desolation. (ESV)
Matthew 25:37-40
Then the righteous will answer him, saying, "Lord, when did we see
you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when
did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?" 40 And
the King will answer them, "Truly, I say to you, as
you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to
me." (ESV)
Luke 6:32-34,36
If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you
lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that
to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
(ESV)
Acts 6:1,3
Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in
number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews
because their widows were being neglected in the daily
distribution. 3 Therefore,
brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute,
full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this
duty. (ESV)
1 Corinthians 12:21-27
The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again
the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." 22 On the contrary,
the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23
and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we
bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated
with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not
require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to
the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the
body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is
honored, all rejoice together.
27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually
members of it. (ESV)
Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor
your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a
promise), 3 "that it may go well with you and that you may live long
in the land." (ESV)
1 Timothy 5:16
If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care
for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for
those who are really widows. (ESV)
James 1:26 - 2:1-5,8-9
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but
deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion
that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to
visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself
unstained from the world. 1 My brothers, show no partiality as
you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2
For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your
assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if
you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say,
"You sit here in a good place," while you say to the poor man, "You
stand over there," or, "Sit down at my feet," 4 have you not then
made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil
thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen
those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the
kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 8 If you
really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall
love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well. 9 But if you
show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law
as transgressors. (ESV)
